Chairwoman Hautala hosted on December 2nd an event in European Parliament with Save the Children to commemorate United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child 20th anniversary. The event took stock the progress achieved and the remaining challenges in making human rights for children reality.[:]
The entry into force of the new Treaty of Lisbon which mentions children’s rights explicitly for the first time gives new impetus to the European Parliament in protection and promotion of rights of children.
Chairwoman Hautala stressed in her opening statement that the European Parliament must continue to play an important role and use its strengthened powers under the new Treaty to enhance the fulfilment of the EU’s obligations in promotion of children’s rights in its internal and external affairs.
