Chairwoman Hautala attended in Moscow the preliminary hearing of Serge Konstantinov and Michael Krieger who were violently arrested on Saturday. They were peacefully demonstrating on the Constitution Day and there asking the authorities to implement the Russian constitution better. [:]It is not unusual at all that peaceful demonstrators are detained in Russia but it seems that these individuals face more severe measures than usually. Chairwoman reminds that the question of better implementation of the Russian constitution is wholly legitimate one and an issue which also the EU has continuously raised. Charging of these two men is both alarming and unacceptable act on behalf of the authorities, Chairwoman Hautala stated after the hearing. The case continues. Her office will continue to observe the proceedings closely.
