ICC Presses on Accountability in Libya

Chairwoman Hautala welcomes the announcement made by the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court on 3 March, to open an investigation into the situation in Libya. “This decision comes not a moment too soon. While international community has taken its time to debate various options to effectively stop the atrocities in Libya, I welcome the decisive action by the Prosecutor of the ICC,” she said. [:]

Chairwoman Hautala emphasized that while grave human rights violations continue being carried out and human lives continue to be lost, lending full support to the Court and its Prosecutor is vital. It is vital not only by the 114 states parties to the Court, but by the international community as a whole. This is a responsibility we all share.

Only by fully backing up the pursuit of accountability and justice for the people in Libya, the international community will be able to redeem its pledges of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom from fear and right to life, liberty and security of person, she added.
