Committee to debate human rights in North Korea

The European Parliament Subcommittee on Human Rights will discuss the human rights situation in North Korea tomorrow, on 7 April.[:]Chairwoman Hautala welcomes the debate as both timely and urgently necessary. The human rights situation in North Korea is one of the worst in the world and remains a grave concern of the international community. The UN has looked into the situation recently by the Resolution “Human Rights in Democratic People’s Republic of Korea” adopted on 25th March and in the Universal Periodic Review, which Korea underwent recently. Unfortunately, North Korea refused to accept any recommendations on human rights that were made. Chairwoman Hautala hopes that the European Parliament would look into the situation more closely and that the hearing would be an incentive for the Commission to pronounce itself more vigorously on the matter.
