Heidi, among a group of MEPs wrote a letter to the Russian president Putin urging for immediate release of Ilmi Umerov, deputy head of Mejlis of Crimean Tatars. . Umerov has been a traget of politically motivated prosecution and was forcibly taken to psychiatric confinement on 18 August. Due to his diabetes he would urgently need medical care.
The MEPs express their great concern with the overall situation in occupied Crimea, in particular the deterioration of the human rights of Crimean Tatars, the indigenous population of the region. Umerov’s treatment is considered a clear violation by Russia of international human rights standards and contradict to the European Convention for Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
They call for immediate release of Umerov from the psychiatric hospital and appropriate medical treatment being provided for him with no delay. The MEPs also remind that the EU considers the occupation and annexation of Crimea, part of Ukraine, illegal.
